Monster voice generator

Monster Voice Generator

This monster voice generator is built for creatures, not fallen angels: the shape in the vents, the thing under the swamp water, the giant at the treeline, the machine that kept running after its makers died. Revenant is already half metal, and the Demon effect at full strength buries it in grit, a lagging second throat and a cavern tail. Preview any voice through it free.

Monster lines, in pieces

A monster’s vocabulary is stolen. It knows a handful of words, uses them slightly wrong and repeats the ones it likes. Write in fragments: two or three syllables, a full stop, the same word again. Hunger reads better than grammar, and every line below opens straight in the monster voice generator.

01The thing in the vents
“Tap. Tap. I know this house. I know the warm room. I know the small bed. Tap. Tap. Coming down.”

A full stop after every phrase keeps the words alive at 100%.

02The swamp
“Water is cold. Water is quiet. You walk on my roof. Stay. Stay. Sink.”

Undertaker makes the same words slower and heavier.

03The giant
“Little fires. Little roofs. I count them. One. Two. Three. Gone.”

Overlord turns the giant from hungry into deliberate.

04The one the size of a city
“City. Loud. City hurts. I make it quiet. I make all of it quiet.”

Leave long gaps between clips; size lives in the silence around the voice.

05The stitched machine
“Repair complete. Flesh parts, adequate. Remaining flesh, located. Behind the door. Behind. The. Door.”

Commas between nouns make it sound like a parts list.

06The mimic
“Hi. It’s me. It’s me, from before. Can you open up? It’s so cold out here. It’s me. It’s me.”

Swap to Stranger with Demon at 20%: almost a person, about one semitone wrong.

Effect recipe

How the creature sound is built at 100%

This page opens the monster voice generator with the Demon effect at its ceiling. Every stage runs live in your browser through the Web Audio API, each pushed to the end of its range:

Revenant

  1. 1

    Pitch drop

    about −6.2 semitones

Playback slows to 0.7×. Everything drops and stretches, so a two-word fragment fills the time of a sentence.

  2. 2

    Body weight

    +10 dB below 220 Hz

The low shelf is at its maximum: the resonance of a chest that has to duck under doorways.

  3. 3

    Grit

    drive 36, 4× oversampled

Heavy clipping turns breath into gravel. The 5.2 kHz low-pass removes fizz but also blunts s, t and k — the first sounds to go missing.

  4. 4

    Lagging throat

octave down, under 900 Hz, 0.43 level

A copy runs at half the voice’s speed, so it falls behind: by the voice’s third word, the undertow is still dragging the first. Long sentences smear; short ones hold.

  5. 5

    Cavern

    2.8 s reverb, 55% wet

More than half of what you hear is reflection. Gaps between phrases fill with tail, so keep them; a full stop gives the cave something to answer.

At 100%, words go missing in two places: soft consonants under the grit, and long lines where the lagging copy drifts behind. Keep phrases to two or three syllables, end each with a full stop, repeat the word that matters. For a creature that mimics a human, try Stranger with Demon at 20%: about one semitone down, close enough to pass at a door.

How it works

Using the monster voice generator, step by step

  1. 1

    Break the sentence

Write the full line, then cut it into pieces of two or three words. Turn every “and” into a full stop and repeat one word.

  2. 2

    Choose the creature

Revenant for machines and abominations, Undertaker for big slow things, Overlord for a giant that knows exactly what it is doing.

  3. 3

Play at full, then back off

Start the monster voice generator at 100% to hear the ceiling. If a key word vanishes, lower the slider a step at a time; the audio is not regenerated, so it costs nothing.

Use cases

Where a creature voice generator earns its keep

A spiked rock-skinned monster with glowing yellow eyes standing in a dark crystal cave
01

Creature games

Hunger barks, idle mutters, the voice at the dark end of a corridor. Render several takes of each bark in the monster voice generator so the growl doesn’t repeat every time a trigger fires.

Pencil sketches of monsters pinned to a board on a table, with a microphone under a studio lamp
02

Animation and puppets

Monster voice text to speech for a puppet, a clay creature or a 3D model: regenerate the line whenever the animation timing changes.

A huge moss-covered giant made of bark lumbering through a misty forest
03

Tabletop monsters

Pre-render the troll under the bridge, the thing in the well and the construct guarding the vault. Play it the moment the party opens the wrong door.

A towering long-legged creature silhouetted over pylons and a foggy valley town at dusk
04

Trailers and shorts

Four words from something the size of a city, over a black screen, do more work than a minute of narration. The monster voice generator lets you audition several readings of those four words before the edit locks.

Tips

Writing for things with too many teeth

  • Write as if the creature learned to speak from overheard scraps: nouns and verbs, almost no adjectives.
  • Repetition is hunger. “Open. Open. Open.” sounds more desperate than any description.
  • Hide one wrong word. A creature that says “warm” when it means “alive” is worse than one that says “alive”.
  • For a mimic, write the most ordinary line you can — a greeting, a name — and let Stranger with a little Demon supply the wrongness.
  • Download the WAV to keep the monster voice effect baked in; the MP3 is the clean voice, handy if you want to layer your own roars underneath.
  • Before you export, play the same take in the monster voice generator at 100%, 70% and 40%. The slider never regenerates the audio, so the comparison is free; keep the level that loses the fewest words.
